  7. Quick Start
  8. ===========
  9.  
  10. Thank you for purchasing 2000lite and XPlite!  2000lite Professional will also 
  11. work on Windows XP and XPlite will work on Windows 2000!  ThatÆs right - one 
  12. program for BOTH operating systems.  We currently distribute both an XPlite and 
  13. 2000lite program as there are some advanced features coming in a future version 
  14. that require we split them.
  15.  
  16. XPlite/2000lite Professional is entirely self-contained. There is no bulky 
  17. installation program and no un-installation program. They are not needed. Just 
  18. place the program where YOU want it.  
  19.  
  20. 1) Copy XPlite.exe or 2000lite.exe to your Windows desktop (or any location you 
  21. prefer)
  22. 2) Double click on the program icon to start.
  23. 3) Read the License and Accept it.
  24. 5) Add and Remove Windows Components

  34. XPlite and 2000lite Professional give YOU the power to set up YOUR machine the 
  35. way YOU want! The power to remove unwanted features, the power to remove 
  36. upgrades that go bad, the power to strip potential security and privacy threats 
  37. out by the roots.

  39. XPlite\2000lite is a world class configuration utility that enhances Windows by 
  40. creating many modular operating system components that you can choose to 
  41. install or remove from your system.  Pick and choose which features YOU need or 
  42. YOU want!  More than a powerful configuration utility - 2000lite gives you 
  43. amazing control to repair Windows as well.  If a particular technology gives 
  44. you trouble you can completely remove it, and then reinstall it as cleanly as 
  45. the day Windows was first installed on your computer.
  46.  
  47. The ultimate security system?  There can be little argument that certain 
  48. Microsoft technologies have proven themselves to put your privacy, security and 
  49. system stability at risk.  The sheer number of Windows Update security fixes 
  50. that are released on an almost daily basis testify to this fact.  You can 
  51. choose alternate technologies to avoid the security risks, yet the flawed 
  52. components remain on your system unused, until the next irresponsible hacker or 
  53. malicious script takes advantage of the situation.  Everybody should be running 
  54. with the latest patches and Service Packs - but is this enough?  2000lite 
  55. allows you to completely remove features that might put you at risk.  For 
  56. example - many email viruses use Outlook Express and the Windows Address Book 
  57. to invade your privacy and that of your associates whose addresses you have 
  58. stored.  If you choose to use an alternate email system then XPlite\2000lite 
  59. allows you to totally remove Outlook Express and the Windows Address Book from 
  60. your system.  Now you *know* you are protected once and for all!

  62. Modular by design! - What comes outà goes back in!
  63. What if you change your mind and want to reinstall one of the system components 
  64. that you previously uninstalled? No problem! Each uninstaller is coupled with 
  65. an equally powerful installer so you can recover uninstalled components. It is 
  66. as easy as ticking a check box.

  68. Safety!
  69. ======
  70. XPlite is 100% compatible with Windwos XP System Restore.  You can remove
  71. EVERY basic feature in XPlite and still have the full protection of System
  72. Restore provided   you have allowed enough disk space for the changes to be
  73. stored (The disk space setting is adjustable under the My Computer properties
  74. System Restore tab.  If you find something amiss just restore to an earlier
  75. time.  XPlite will set a restore point before making any changes to your system
  76. and it will warn you first if the restore point can not be set.
  77.  
  78. Source Files
  79. ============
  80. When installing optional components, XP\2000lite intelligently knows which 
  81. files have been updated by Microsoft Service packs.  Your Operating system will 
  82. have a cache of Service Pack installation files occupying a considerable amount 
  83. of space in your Windows folder.  If you remove these you will need to have a 
  84. local source of service pack files available for your operating system.  If you 
  85. purchased 2000lite on CDROM then we have included the most recent Service Pack 
  86. (at the time of purchase) on the CDROM.  You can also download the full network 
  87. installation from Microsoft (Windows 2000 SP4 is over 100MB).  Use the 
  88. XP\2000lite Preferences Dialog to set the correct path to your Service Pack 
  89. source files.  You should *NOT* simply point the Service Pack Source path to 
  90. your regular Windows 2000 CDROM as this may result in downgrading of system 
  91. files on your computer and potentially the re-introduction of bugs that were 
  92. fixed by Microsoft in the Service Packs.

  94. If you find the setup engine is asking you for the locations of your setup 
  95. files then you should set the location in the preferences tab.  The ideal 
  96. source for filesof the same Service Pack level as your current installation is 
  97. a single "Slipstreamed" CDROM that is of the same level so that you do not have 
  98. to juggle CDROMs between the original version, and the Service Pack files.  
  99. Simply point both paths to the single slipstreamed CDROM that has the 
  100. appropriate file versions on it.

  102.  
  103. Features
  104. ========
  105. XPlite gives you full command over the Windows File Protection (WFP) feature.  
  106. Windows File Protection is a powerful Windows feature that prevents system 
  107. files from being overwritten by poorly designed application and driver 
  108. installers.  However the side effect is that users are prevented from 
  109. controlling their own systems.  XPlite has been specifically engineered to work 
  110. with the WFP feature so that changes to the system are monitored and 
  111. continually protected afterwards.

  113. XPlite must disable WFP in order to customize the operating system, but after 
  114. the system is set up the way you want WFP is re-enabled and you continue with a 
  115. protected operating system.!

  122. Advanced Features
  123. =================
  124. XPlite\2000lite is an extremely powerful application that has the caperbility 
  125. to remove core system files, services and deeply rooted registry trees.  We 
  126. have grouped some of the more "serious" components into an Advanced Features 
  127. section of the Add\Remove options tree.  To enable the advanced features check 
  128. the checkbox in the user preference tab.  Be very careful.  While you will not 
  129. crash your machine, you may loose a function that you didnt know you needed if 
  130. you remove many of the advanced features.  For example it is possible to 
  131. eliminate all microsoft networking and you will no longer be able to share 
  132. files between machines on a Microsoft network.  If in doubt - leave the 
  133. advanced features installed. It is an easy process to re-install features if 
  134. you think you removed something you need.  Just tick the box  and let XPlite 
  135. re-install the feature as if it was installed for the first time.

  137. The Future
  138. ==========
  139. As a licensed XPlite Professional customer you have access to our latest beta 
  140. files for the next version also.  We will be adding a lot more features to the 
  141. add\remove list as well as some other very nice utilities that will scan the 
  142. driver files and weed out some redundancy.

  144. Multilanguage versions are on the way also.  The interface from v1.2 onward is 
  145. fully unicode enabled.

  147. Your license
  148. ============
  149. You must not redistribute LitePC Technologies software to anyone or allow 
  150. anyone else to access your secure download area using your license information.
  151.  
  152. Licenses, passwords or Activation Keys found "circulating" on the internet will 
  153. result in your License being revoked immediately and your download access 
  154. removed from the servers.  Each License and Activation Key is unique for each 
  155. user.  It is your responsibility to keep this information private.  If your 
  156. license "gets out" it is your fault and you will forfeit your access for future 
  157. downloads and upgrades.  Please keep your license secure.
